Description

Do you think filmmaking is exclusively reserved for Hollywood big-shots? Or do you think

documentary is just boring old TV shows?

Planet G(reece), the latest educational program designed by Exile Room targeting teenagers, is here to change your mind, proving that documentary is the ideal way to tell your story with whatever means you have at your disposal. At the same time, it will introduce participants to a vast array of exciting professions that are worth getting to know!

Planet G(reece) is a series of workshops with documentary at their core, targeting teenagers between 13 and 19 years old, both Greeks and immigrants, with the intention of encouraging intercultural collaboration and introducing them to a brand new world that could forever change their answer to the agonizing question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Each workshop cycle will accept up to 25 participants and will focus on a different field, producing a different short documentary at the end. After the workshops have been completed, all films will be screened in a closing festival.

Planet G(reece) Workshops #1 to #5 have been completed.

Submissions for Planet G(reece) Workshops #6 & #7 are open and will remain open for the duration of the programme. Interested parties can only participate in one of the workshops.

Planet G(reece) will conclude with an online portal where all films will become available to the public, along with workshop manuals. This material can be used as an educational tool by educators, parents, schools and NGOs who want to recreate one or all of the workshops.

The project Planet G(reece) [Part A: workshops 1 & 2] is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

The project Planet G(reece) [Part B: workshops 3-7] is implemented under the Active citizens fund in Greece by Exile Room.

The Active citizens fund in Greece is supported through a € 12m grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as part of the EEA Grants 2014 - 2021. The program aims to develop the sustainability and capacity of the civil society sector in Greece, and to strengthen its role in promoting and safeguarding democratic procedures, active citizenship and human rights. The Fund Operator for the Active citizens fund in Greece is Bodossaki Foundation in consortium with SolidarityNow.

Additional Information

workshop #1: Doc & Cameras [completed]

What is the best way to shoot reality? With an i-phone, a photo camera, a handycam or does it take

professional equipment? The answer is, all of the above! In this workshop, participants will shoot the same subject in four different ways, as they explore the places and faces in the streets of Monastiraki.

workshop #2: Doc & Photography [completed]

Have you ever heard anyone say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”? In this workshop, we will learn how to tell stories with pictures. True stories, like the ones that take place right outside our door, in our neighborhood, our city, our planet. We’ll go in search of the truth and we’ll document our findings in pictures, instead of words, just like a regular photojournalist!

workshop #3: Doc & Animation [completed]

Have you ever witnessed the making of a television news program? What is the role of the journalist in a digital world, dominated by image and video, and how does one discover and broadcast the latest news? In this workshop, we will transform into journalists and producers! We’ll shadow someone who’s currently making headlines, discover what makes a great interview and gain insight into the world of video journalism and mass media.

workshop #4: Doc & Activism [completed]

It’s time to take climate change seriously! In this workshop, we’ll look in every corner of the city for revolutionary, eco-friendly solutions and people who have dedicated their lives to saving the planet, and we will make a short documentary about protecting the environment.

workshop #5: Doc & Sound [completed]

Have you ever tried watching a horror film with the sound off? If not, this is probably a good time to tell you that it’s not scary at all! Does that mean that sound is what causes the strongest emotional reactions and not image? In this workshop, we’ll split into groups and each one will create a different audio landscape for the same silent story, turning it into a completely different experience. The participants’ sound recordings will be transformed into a short film!

workshop #6: Doc & Graphic Design [February 25, March 4, 11 & 18, 2023]

Have you ever considered that a poster is not just an impressive image but a way of communicating with your audience? A design studio who specializes in cultural events will teach participants the basic tools of graphic design and help them create their own original posters using different techniques, inspired by a series of short films. Roll up your sleeves and get to work!

workshop #7: Doc & Journalism [May 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2023]

Have you ever witnessed the making of a television news program? What is the role of the journalist in a digital world, dominated by image and video, and how does one discover and broadcast the latest news? In this workshop, we will transform into journalists and producers! We’ll shadow someone who’s currently making headlines, discover what makes a great interview and gain insight into the world of video journalism and mass media.
